The Guinea-Bissau national football team is controlled by the Federação de Futebol da Guiné-Bissau. Before 1975, they were known as the Portuguese Guinea.
They have enjoyed some success at regional level, however, lifting the «Tournoi des cinq» by evading the challenges of Angola, Mozambique, São Tomé and the Cape Verde Islands, reaching the Final of the «Coupe Amilcar Cabral» in 1983 and twice winning a tournament that brings together a number of Portuguese-speaking teams.
Many players from Guinea-Bissau play for clubs in Portugal. These players have dual nationality and therefore have a special status in that country's league championship (they are classed as «assimilated players»).
