As in most African countries, football is the national sport in Burundi. Founded in 1948 and a member of FIFA since 1972, the association is well organised and takes an active part in football, sending representative teams in all age categories to both men's and women's FIFA competitions.
Although one of the poorest countries in the world, it still manages to organise football well despite a lack of funds. Ms Lydia Nsekera is one of only three female association presidents in the FIFA family and ensures that the population of Burundi are given the opportunity to experience joy and emotions, despite the ravages of war, and momentarily to forget the deprivation that is the order of the day in other countries.
