Former Ivory Coast coach François Zahoui is in the Niger capital Niamey holding talks with the football federation in view of a coaching job with the national team, the Ivorian press agency said on Thursday.

The Mena are without a head coach since the departure of Frenchman Roland Courbis, who led the team to the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

Reports from the local media say there is a general consensus within the Niger FA to bring the 49-year-old former midfielder on board.

The Mena captain and Etoile du Sahel’s forward Moussa Maazou is enthusiastic to see the Ivorian coach take over the Niger outfit.

“François Zahoui is a great coach. He has worked with some of the best players in the world like Didier Drogba. I think he can be of great help to our national team. We hope he completes the deal with our FA and becomes our new coach,” Maazou said.

Zahoui was fired by the Ivorian football federation few months after leading the team to the final of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, losing on penalties to Zambia.

He was later offered the job of the U20 Ivorian team coach.
