Simba vs. URA
Feni Ali brace was enough to give the Ugandan side a deserved win over 2011 finalists Simba in an entertaining match at the 60,000-seater stadium, a day after another Tanzanian side and defending champions Yanga fell by the same margin to Atletico of Burundi.

Meanwhile, Azam FC launched their Kagame Cup debut with a 1-1 draw against Zanzibar envoy Mafunzo in a group B encounter at the Chamazi Stadium in the city yesterday, while Vita Club of Congo demolished Port of Djibouti 7-0 in the early kick-off staged at the same venue.

The Simba-URA game started at a cracking pace with both sides to draw the first blood and succeeded in creating several half chances that none of the two teams could translate into goals.

Ssentengo made a brilliant run into Simba’s box on the 8th minute, beating several defenders on the way. However he couldn’t finish off his move as he dilly-dallied with the ball only to let the defence reorganize and clear the danger.

Simba threatened to take the lead a minute later following a good move by Milovan Cirkovic’s side, which saw, Mudde Mussa play a nice through ball to marauding Mwinyi Kazimoto who beat defender Derrick Walulya before taking aim at goal but his shot went inches wide.

URA stunned Simba when they took the lead in the 11th minute through Feni who rose above Simba defenders, Juma Nyosso and Obadia Mungusa to meet a beautiful Oscar Agaba’s cross from the left flank, before beating goalkeeper Juma Kaseja from almost 18 yards with a well directed header.

The goal seemingly unsettled Simba and Ssentongo, playing against his former side, went close to double his side’s lead few minutes later after he beat his markers only to put his effort wide with only Kaseja at his mercy.

Simba’s Zambian striker Felix Sunzu and Ugandan midfielder Mudde Mussa were thwarted by the impressive URA custodian Mugabi Yasin who made several key saves to maintain his team’s 1-0 advantage at the interval.

Simba picked up in the second half with Kanu Mbiyavanga running rings around the URA defence, but Derrick Walulya stood firm thwarting every move.

A well-organized and disciplined URA defence tightened up things on resumption making it harder for Simba attackers.

Cirkovic was forced into reshuffling his parks by bringing in striker Abdallah Juma in place of ineffective Mrwanda and later on Haruna Moshi replaced Mbiyavanga, with Amri Kiemba giving way to Uhuru Selemani.

The subs hardly changed the complexion of the game, with Ugandan side still looking the more composed team on the pitch, while Simba completely failed to break up URA’s watertight defence.

Ssentengo went close once again on the 72nd minute when he drew a fine save from Kaseja. The diminutive attacker outmuscled Mungusa on the right and found his way into the box before unleashing a powerful low shot that Kaseja managed to tip around the post for a futile corner.

Feni effectively ended Simba’s hopes of at least securing a draw from the fixture after he planted home the second goal with a diving header as URA again reasserted their dominancy over the Tanzania side, who have never won against the Ugandan outfit.

AS Port 0 - AS Vita Club 7

Taddy Etekiama, a supremely gifted attacker broke the resistance of the Djibouti side in the 24th minute to give Vita Club the lead , then went on to a total of four, with more strikes in the 30th, 74th and 84th minute (penalty).

The other scorers were: Romaric Rogombe (21st minute), Emmanuel Ngudikama (34th) and Basilua Makola (69th).

The overawed AS Port had tried to strengthen their team in preparation for the tournament, recruiting no less than six foreign from Rwanda (three), Cameroon (two), Somalia and Kenya.

Twin attackers Jean Bosco Gasana, a Rwandan and Roland Ayuk Agbor , a Cameroonian, tried the best they could for a goal but found themselves lacking pace to chase several good through balls provided by their midfield.

The other side in this three-team Group ‘C’ is Kenyan champions Tusker whose coach, Sammy Omollo, spent time at Chamazi watching the action and plotting his team’s response in matches on Thursday, July 19 [v Mafunzo] and Saturday, July 21 against Azam.
