Cameroon debut their 2013 Afcon qualifiers with a trip to Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday.

This is the first rendezvous for the Indomitable Lions in 2012, a little over three months after the Marrakech fiasco, which saw the Cameroonian players boycott an away game against Algeria over a rather dark story of players’ bonuses.

This incident has left its mark since the emblematic captain of the Lions, Samuel Eto’o has had to serve an eight-month suspension and will therefore not be present in Bissau.

Other absentees will be Enoh Eyong suspended, Benoît Assou-Ekotto who has provisionally not made himself available for selection, Benoît Angbwa and Jean II Makoun who did not accept the sanction imposed on their captain and Stéphane M’Bia who is injured.

Nancy’s Benjamin Moukandjo remains uncertain, while Jean-Armel Kana-Biyik of Rennes should be available to take his place.

After the failure in the Africa Cup of Nations 2012 qualifiers, the Lions have a lot to make up for and coach Denis Lavagne, who had a good start to his tenure as head of the selection in winning the LG Cup, is well aware of this.

“There is support for the team, absolute passion in fact.  But the failure to qualify for the Afcon 2012 did a lot of damage.  Another failure would be even more painful for the people of Cameroon,” declared the former Coton Sport manager.

Their opponents of the day suffered six defeats in the Afcon 2012 qualifiers and have not enjoyed a victory at home since they hosted Kenya on 4 September 2010.

Guinea-Bissau coach Luis Norton de Matos will be relying on his striker Basile de Carvalho to obtain a result at home, before the return leg in Cameroon in June.

Kick-off for Wednesday’s encounter will be at 16h30 at the Estadio Lino Correia in Bissau.
