_Kilimanjaro Stars revived their hopes of retaining the Cecafa Tusker Challenge Cup with a 3-0 drubbing of Djibouti in their second Group A match at the National Stadium on Tuesday.

Having lost their opening match to Rwanda, the home side went into the match aware that nothing but a big win would do and they got off to the perfect start with Thomas Ulimwengu putting them ahead in the second minute.

Though it was one way traffic, the Stars struggled to translate chances to goals and they needed a slice of luck to double their lead on 37 minutes.

Mwinyi Kazimoto’s 35 yard shot took a wicked deflection off his own teammate to make it 2-0 at the breather.

The second half saw the hosts squander chance after chance as they sought to better their goal difference. Said Maulid beat the keeper on 58 minutes but were unable to find Ulimwengu who was unmarked in the box.

Substitute Nurdin Bakari went close 18 minutes from time when he shifted the ball to his left foot before letting fly but his shot cannoned back off the crossbar.

They finally got the third goal five minutes from the end when substitute Yusuf Rashid took advantage of comical defending by Mahdi Ahmed to make it 3-0.

“I accept the loss though the goals we conceded came from stupid mistakes. We conceded the second and third goals due to the grass. The team is very young but I feel it has a bright future,” said Djibouti coach Gharsalli Noureddine.

His opposite number Boniface Mkwasa was delighted with the win, “We were unlucky in the first match but we rectified that today and I think we played well. Djibouti has also improved and they made it tough for us.”

Kilimanjaro Stars face Zimbabwe in their last group match and Mkwasa says they will go for nothing short of victory, “We respect Zimbabwe and they play well but we will go all out for a win.”
