Orlando Pirates needed extra time to defeat Santos 1-0 in their MTN8 quarterfinal at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday evening.

New signing Siyabonga Sangweni marked his official debut with a goal in the 105th minute, helping the Buccaneers join Ajax Cape Town and Mamelodi Sundowns in the last four of the competition.

Hardly any chances were created in the first half of the regulation 90 minutes, though Pirates’ Bongani Ndulula and Santos’ Vuyisile Wana both had opportunities they could possibly have made more of.

The Soweto side enjoyed the lion’s share of possession, but the visitors from Cape Town were more than happy to sit back and use the pace of their forwards on the counter attack.

Santos youngster Gregory Roelf forced a good save from Josephs on the hour mark with a difficult free kick that needed just a slight tough to deflect it beyond the keeper’s reach.

Pirates substitute Mark Mayambela added a new dimension to the home side’s attack and he almost broke the deadlock in the 78th minute, flicking impishly on target from a corner kick but Thabiso Ntloana was on hand to clear off his goal line.

The midfielder had perhaps the best chance of the game early on in the first half of extra time, but he toe-poked a shot wide of the near post after showing great pace and strength to get away from the attentions of Zairon van Beulen.

Penalties seemed inevitable but Pirates, to their credit, pushed hard to decide the game before spot kicks were called for and they were rewarded on the stroke of half time in the extra 30 minutes.

Defender Siyabonga Sangweni found himself with a sight of the target from a tight angle and got away a low shot that squirmed under the body of goalkeeper Tshepo Motsoeneng before rolling over the goal line.

The last MTN8 quarterfinal on Sunday sees Kaizer Chiefs host Bidvest Wits at the FNB Stadium.
