The Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) has confirmed that the once-troubled Darfur region in western Sudan will host the 2013 Cecafa Club Championships next month.

The football body said that Democratic Republic of Congo side St. Eloi Lupopo will take part in the event.

Cecafa Secretary General Nicholas Musonye also told BBC Sport that "a team from Eritrea is yet to confirm".

Musonye said that Darfur is 90% ready to host the event, but for only two of the three groups.

"Two football stadiums in Al Fashir - Al Nuggaa [capacity 15,000] and Al Fashir [45,000] - were of impressive quality and so were hotel accommodations and transport," he said.

Kano Pillars of Nigeria and Orlando Pirates of South Africa hit five and Primeiro Agosto of Angola and Tusker of Kenya four as the CAF Champions League began this weekend with a goal glut.

Zimbabwean Takesure Chinyama bagged four as 1995 champions Pirates triumphed 5-0 in Soweto against the semi-professionals and students of Djabal from the Comoros Islands.

Pillars, semi-finalists four years ago, were almost as ruthless with a 5-1 whipping of Central African Republic visitors Olympique Real Bangui in Kano as Nafiu Ibrahim struck twice.

David Ochieng was another goal poacher to score twice in a preliminary round, first leg tie as Tusker came from behind on the Indian Ocean island nation of the Seychelles to win 4-1 against Saint Michel United.

The Zanzibar Heroes became the second team to make the last four of this year’s Cecafa Tusker Cup after beating Burundi 6-5 in a penalty shootout at Lugogo on Monday.

Tanzania were the first through following their 2-0 victory over Rwanda. Abdallah Othman scored the winning penalty for Zanzibar after normal time had ended goalless.

Burundi were the better side throughout the 90, with Zanzibar defending with their lives. However, when Ugandan referee Denis Batte signaled for spot kicks, they fell short.

Their skipper Selemani Ndikumana, who picked up a knock very early in the game, was the first to take but skied his kick as Burundi started the shootout in the worst possible way.

Group C is set to become the tightest Group in the ongoing CECAFA Tusker Senior Challenge Cup at the Namboole Stadium in Kampala, Uganda. Zanzibar beat Rwanda 2-1, both Zanzibar goals being scored by danger man Khamis Mcha Khamis in each half.

The win sends Zanzibar to top of the pool with four points and a cleansheet while Rwanda stick to second with three points, same as Malawi who earlier beat Eritrea 3-2 in an earlier match.

In a pitch that no one would admire playing in, Zanzibar showed their intent to win the match by strategically avoiding short passing and instead resorting to long balls. Mcha scored the opener from such in the 8th minute tapping past Jean Claude Ndoli in the Rwandese goal.

The CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup saw its first barren draw of the tournament with Eritrea and Zanzibar firing blanks.

Eritrea surprised everyone managing to hold a more experienced side who looked like minnows in the match. The Eritreans though slow in their play created more flowing passes than their opponents but were never lucky infront of goal.

They created the first chance in the 6th minute through Ahmed Abdulrahman who shot over the bar after a good flick on. Captain Hermon Tecleab saw his freekick from just outside the area fly directly into keeper Mwadini Ally’s arms as Eritrea increased their attack.
