Cameroon humbled visiting Guinea Bissau 1-0 on Saturday at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaounde to book their place for the second and final qualifying round of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Indomitable Lions came into the match with a one-goal lead from the first leg played in Bissau last February and needed a simple draw to sail through, but the encounter was more than just an Afcon qualifying affair to the team, fans and officials of the central African nation.

Coach Denis Lavagne, who came under fire after losing 2-1 to Libya last weekend in 2014 World Cup qualifying, was determined to present a new face to the public, but the lone goal victory seemed far from appeasing.

Carlos Manuel
Guinea Bissau football federation has appointed Portuguese manager Carlos Manuel as coach of the national team ahead of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations second round qualifying.

The 54-year-old former midfielder will succeed his compatriot Luis Norton de Matos, who had led the team since 2010.

Manuel has coached a number of football clubs mainly in Portugal including Sporting Lisbon and Benfica but is taking up a national team job for the first time.

The Djurtus have been eliminated from the qualifying campaign of the 2014 FIFA World Cup but are still in the run for the finals of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and will be hosted by the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon on Saturday in Yaoundé for the return leg of the second round qualifying.

Cameroon were made to fight hard but came away with a 1-0 victory away in Guinea Bissau in their 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Wednesday.

The home side held their own and indeed had a goal disallowed against the Indomitable Lions that might have changed the complexion of the game.

But a single moment of brilliance from Cameroon star Eric Choupo-Moting sealed the victory as he went on a 40-yard run through the home defence before cooly beating the keeper.

In the 9th minute Alex Song got a free-kick and Vincent Aboubacar was closed from opening the score. The Valenciennes striker then found the post two minutes before half time.

Cameroon debut their 2013 Afcon qualifiers with a trip to Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday.

This is the first rendezvous for the Indomitable Lions in 2012, a little over three months after the Marrakech fiasco, which saw the Cameroonian players boycott an away game against Algeria over a rather dark story of players’ bonuses.

This incident has left its mark since the emblematic captain of the Lions, Samuel Eto’o has had to serve an eight-month suspension and will therefore not be present in Bissau.

Other absentees will be Enoh Eyong suspended, Benoît Assou-Ekotto who has provisionally not made himself available for selection, Benoît Angbwa and Jean II Makoun who did not accept the sanction imposed on their captain and Stéphane M’Bia who is injured.
