Equatorial Guinea face being stripped of a 4-3 win over Cape Verde in 2014 World Cup qualifying for fielding an ineligible player.

Fifa says it has opened a disciplinary case against the Equatorial Guinea FA after last month's victory in Malabo.

Football's world governing body has not specified which player's eligibility they are investigating.

While none of the Equatorial Guinea starting line-up was born there are regulations that allow players to represent a country.

According to Article 17 of football's world governing body's statutes,  a player wishing to acquire a new nationality must fulfil at least one of the following conditions:

Several of the favourites in Africa’s qualifiers for the 2014 Fifa World Cup Brazil struggled on the third matchday of the group stage, now at the half-way point.

Morocco's loss in Tanzania was the biggest surprise, while 2012 African champions Zambia were held to a draw in Lesotho and Senegal and new African kings Nigeria were held at home. As only the ten group winners advance to the final round of qualifying, the dropped points will undoubtedly increase the pressure and the chances of a major shock moving forward.

The Super Eagles were expected to enjoy a bit of a walk in the park at home against their East African opponents, however, it turned out to be anything but as 20-year-old Kahata gave the visitors the lead when he scored direct from a free-kick.

Equatorial Guinea has managed to get the entire country excited, thanks to the great victory won this Sunday against Cape Verde, in a match valid for the second round of qualifications of the FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014.

Within three minutes of the match, the hero of the match, Emilio Nsue, opened the scoreboard with a head shot received from a corner kick, which he is accustoming us to lately.

Due to a defensive error, Cape Verde tied thanks to Marco Paulo, and team of the Spaniard Andoni Goikoetxea could not get into the game, committing numerous errors and giving its rival the field.

Pierre Aubameyang was on target for the 18th time in Ligue 1 - and remains the second top scorer in the league - after equalising in the 65th minute for Saint Etienne. Thanks to the Gabon striker's effort his side drew 2-2 away at Rennes.

Benjamin Moukandjo fired home his third for struggling Nancy who lost 2-1 at league leaders Paris Saint-Germain. The Cameroon striker had given the visitors the lead in the 36th minute but Nancy succumbed to two goals in the second-half.

Cape Verde striker Odair Fortes gave Reims some hope of getting an equaliser with his 77th minute goal, but an 88th minute substitution paid off for Troyes who sealed the points in added time. It was the Guinea striker Mohamed Yattara's second goal for Troyes.

Nigeria winger Ahmed Musa sealed a 2:0 win for leaders CSKA Moscow over their relegation-threatened hosts Krylya Sovetov as the Russian Premier League resumed after a long winter break.

The Super Eagles star struck in the 72nd minute after Swedish team-mate Pontus Wernbloom had given CSKA a first half lead.

It was the ninth goal of the season for the 20-year-old AFCON star, who has been named in the Super Eagles' squad to tackle Kenya in this month's 2014 World Cup qualifier.

Victor Obinna Nsofor came on in the 79th minute for Lokomotiv Moscow in their 1-0 derby loss away to Dinamo Moscow.

Ghanaian midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng scored AC Milan's second goal of the game as they outclassed Lazio 3-0 to stay third in the Italian Serie A table.

Fellow Ghanaian Isaac Cofie also netted for Chievo after coming on as a first-half substitute. It was Cofie's first goal for Chievo but despite his equaliser his side lost 2-1 to Fiorentina.

Michael Essien played the entire 90 minutes in arguably the biggest game in international club football as his side Real Madrid edged out arch-rivals Barcelona 2-1. Despite the victory - the second in a row against league leaders Barcelona in only a few days - Madrid lie in third position and 13 points behind their rivals.

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah is happy to reach the semi-finals but wants to correct 'some deficiencies' that hampered his team's performance against Cape Verde in their last eight clash on Saturday.

The Black Stars ended Cape Verde's fairytale at the Africa Cup of Nations, beating the Blue Sharks 2-0 in Port Elizabeth to advance.

Substitute Mubarak Wakaso hit two goals in the second half, once from the penalty spot, as Ghana clinched a semi-final meeting with Burkina Faso or Togo.

“The first half was okay.” Appiah said after the game. “The second half was not one of our best games but I think we've got more room for improvement.”

Two goals from substitute Mubarak Wakaso was enough to see Ghana sneak into the semi-final of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in a game where the pre-tournament favourites were completely dominated by the underdogs.

The first goal was Ghana’s only effort at goal at the time and came from the spot.

The Cape Verdeans dominated the game after the goal, but failed to score and were punished late in the game when the Espanyol midfielder capitalised on the Cape Verdean goalkeeper’s decision to come up for the corner to slot into an empty net.

The game started quietly as both teams seemed to be sizing each other up with very few chances.

There is no truer case of ‘David v Goliath’ than when Cape Verde take on Ghana in the first quarterfinal of the 2013 African Cup of Nations at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Saturday, kick-off at 17h00.

Cape Verde, who boast just over half a million people on their contingent of small islands, have, somehow, against all odds, made it past the group stages and into the Knockout round of the continental showpiece.

But it is in the quarterfinals where many football pundits will expect their fairy-tale run to come to an end as they take on African giants in Ghana.

Cape Verde
After masterminding his side's passage to a historic quarter-finals place at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, an ecstatic Cape Verde coach Lucio Antunes has dedicated the unprecedented feat to all his countrymen and women.

The Blue Sharks have been the romantics' dream in this competition and have remained unbeaten in what is their first ever appearance at the African finals. They drew 0:0 with hosts South Africa in their opening game and 1:1 with North African giants Morocco in their second match.

With a population of just over half a million, Cape Verde are the smallest nation to have competed in the AFCON, replacing Equatorial Guinea.
