Al Ahly
Egypt’s Ahly won a record-extending fifth African Super Cup title following a narrow 2-1 victory over Congolese side AC Leopards, who were no pushovers against their mighty opponents.

The hosts, playing in front of around 3,000 spectators at Alexandria’s Egyptian Army Stadium, wasted a handful of clear-cut opportunities before finally breaking the deadlock ten minutes after the restart, thanks to a fierce drive from defensive midfielder Rami Rabeia.

Veteran midfielder Mohamed Barakat looked to have put the tie to bed after doubling Ahly’s lead but Leopards pulled one back with 12 minutes remaining when Rudy Bhebey Ndey held off Wael Gomaa to drill home from inside the area.

Reigning Orange CAF Champions League holders Al Ahly of Egypt meet the Orange CAF Confederation Cup champion  AC Leopards Dolisie of  Congo on Saturday in the Super Cup match to be played at Borg el Arab stadium in the Egypt’s port city of Alexandria.

Al Ahly will start out as favourites largely due to their vast experience in club competition over the past thirty years and even with the tie being played away from their home base in Cairo.

It will be a different Al Ahly side though that plays on Saturday from the one that won the club’s seventh Champions League title last November. From that team coach Hossam El Badry is missing 7 who have moved away from Al Ahly since their Champions League win via transfers and loans.

MAS players lift the trophy
The 2011 Caf Confederation Cup winners Maghreb Association Sportive of Fez became Africa’s champion of champions on Saturday after they beat Caf Champions League title holders Esperance Tunis 4-3 on penalties at the Stade Olympique in Rades following a 1-1 draw at the end of 90 minutes.

Highly tipped favourites ahead of the all-North African clash, the Blood and Gold were stunned early in the game by the visitors, who opened the scoring in the 20th minute through Hamza Bourezzouk to shift much of the pressure on the home side.

The pacy striker linked up with a low cross from defender Hamza Hajji and meandered his way into Esperance area before poking the ball into the back net via the left post.

Reigning African club champions Esperance from Tunisia are set to bridge a 17-year gap this weekend by winning the CAF Super Cup a second time.

The CAF Champions League winners host CAF Confederation Cup title holders Moghreb Fes from Morocco on Saturday at the 60,000-seat November 7 Stadium on the outskirts of Tunis.

Esperance last lifted the trophy in 1995 with a 3-0 triumph over Daring Club Motema Pembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo in Egyptian Mediterranean city Alexandria.

It was the final Super Cup fixture staged at a neutral venue because of low attendances with the subsequent 16 one-off games hosted by the winners of the previous Champions League.
